When I moved to the USA and became a mom, I wanted my son to grow up knowing his language and his culture. I couldn’t find good Albanian books for little ones here, so I started making my own. I hope your family loves them too.
My story: how I became an author of Albanian children’s books
When my son was born, I knew I wanted Albanian to be part of his everyday life. I speak Albanian with him every day, but when I looked for books to read together here in the USA, I couldn’t find what I wanted: simple, colorful books in our language, with the things our families actually do.
So I made them myself. That became ABC dhe 123, a series of Albanian books for children from babies to age 7. Every page is in Albanian with English underneath, so parents who aren’t fluent can read along too.
I fill the books with the little things that make us Albanian: nëna making byrek, gjyshi with his coffee, the kuq e zi flag in November. Three books are out now and more are on the way. I share how we keep Albanian alive at home on Instagram, @raisinglittleshqipe.

Newborns cannot see the way we do. In the first months, a baby’s eyes pick out strong contrast long before soft colors, which is why the first thing my son ever really looked at was black and white. I wanted those first pictures to carry Albanian words too, so that the language would be there from the very beginning, before he could even hold his own head up.
